LEGACY PROJECT FUNDERThe Atlantic PhilanthropiesThe Atlantic Philanthropies foundation upholds the principle of 'giving while living' and was founded by Irish-American Charles 'Chuck' Feeney in the early 1980s, who traces his ancestry to County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.
Among his earliest business successes, was a venture into 'duty-free' sales, selling cigarettes, alcohol and luxury goods to tourists. Feeney's philanthropic organisation, colloquially known simply as Atlantic, has pursued strategically structured programmes of financial support in many countries, aimed at improving non-governmental civil society organisations. Consequently, Atlantic has been a significant supporter of the Community and Voluntary sector in Ireland. Atlantic has also made major financial contributions to the Republic of Ireland’s university infrastructure with the creation of a knowledge economy as a particular focus and co-funding with the Irish government the research initiative known as the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions or PRTLI.
